The Adoption and Sponsorship
On December 2018 the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted the resolution proclaiming January 24th International Day of Education. This resolution was sponsored in the United Nations General Assembly by the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations.
Collegiate Congress the student advocacy organization in New York, is the architect of this resolution.
The vision to create a day of observance for Education started in June of 2018 by Collegiate Congress and Collegiate Internationals. End June onwards they started the drafting of the concept note and the resolution. End July – early August they started presenting the draft to member states. A series of meetings and conversation with UN member states representatives help add substance to the concept note and the resolution. Among the UN member states representatives include the distinguished mission of Afghanistan, Djibouti, Estonia, Greece, Iceland, India, Ireland, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria, Qatar, the United States, etc. End of August the mission of Nigeria agreed to initiate the resolution.
